This culture remind me some of the Japanese folk dance. When the singer started singing I had thought he’s kinda sing like someone from Noh Theater. Those whose creators of the fusion culture of Japanese and Hawaii are brilliant. Hope this wonderful legacy continues on. 💕

i have a little bit of background info on this! so usually when the dancer sits next to the kumu, it’s usually because they’ve been cut. the guy sitting next to the kumu hasn’t been cut, but they were training him. (he lived in japan but moved to hawai’i) at this time, kumu chinky was getting older and had a hard time standing up, so, they brought him up as a kōkua or helper and to help kumu up! this is an updated version lol***
